TechKnow ? Hell No !!

“Technology is ruled by two types of people: those who manage what they do not understand, and those who understand what they do not manage.”

Quite amusing I thought, as I read that line. And when I thought about it for a bit longer, I realized that people I know could be quite distinctly categorized into one of the 3 categories of ‘tech freaks’, ‘tech neutral’ and ‘tech averse’.

I have quite a few of the freaks in my life - My friends like DV whose favorite pastime is to ‘hang out’ at Chroma – the electronics store, walking around like ‘Alice in Wonderland’ gazing in bewilderment at lifeless electronic gadgets which gaze straight back rather emotionlessly at you. (Don’t ask me what’s the point …I don’t quite see any;)) Making a quick note of model numbers and prices while making an equally quick mental analysis of which gadget that they possess needs an upgrade or replacement. Or my dad who first bought a fancy music player and painstakingly built a CD collection (to which I have already staked inheritance claims), then bought an Ipod Nano and transferred the same music onto this remarkable gadget and then bought the JBL speakers so that he could play the Ipod like an audio system :) He has wires, cords and gadgets to connect the zillion other gadgets he has bought, and fearing family backlash and the tendency to be labeled a freak especially by his wife, he often chooses to keep his exploits with technology and gadgets rather discreet ;) So the honor of the “tech freak” title basically goes to the gifted few who understand the technical difference in the horsepower of one car model and the other, the latest in digital camera technology, laptop models, and who have conducted in-depth research to arrive at conclusion on the best cell phone available in the market at any given point of time.

Then ofcourse you have the technology averse - for whom technology and gadgets are serious propaganda by a few to only complicate their lives. Who will read a manual 3 times yet successfully not comprehend a word, albeit written in user friendly English language, not because they cant, but because they perhaps have reason enough to choose to not. The mystery surrounding technology perhaps seems quite endearing and too good to let go off. And perhaps also those who would much rather just make the popcorn and sit and relax leaving it to someone else to decipher and install the LCD TV for the complete movie experience.

Also I was just thinking that its perhaps the ‘law of balance’, that every freak absolutely must have a technology averse partner / companion/ room mate/ sibling …perfect isn’t it ;) matches really are made in heaven ;)

And then you have the third category - 'the tech neutral' - who don’t quite fit into any of the other 2 well defined categories. Who use technology on a daily basis, who won’t deny the extent to which it simplifies their live, whether in the kitchen, office or on the move, yet those who won’t necessarily know any details about the products they use. For whom a cell phone is just a ‘cell phone’ meant for making and receiving calls, and their choice to own a Iphone over a Blackberry Curve has more to do with the image they want to portray rather than an insight into the technical difference between the two gadgets.

This is where I think I would honestly place myself. So in my 28 years of existence I have not bought a single gadget besides my last 2 cell phones …which are er… phones – to receive and make calls ;) If I had to choose between spending 30 grand on a gadget or a holiday I think I’d choose the latter without an iota of doubt. But strangely, at the same time I cant wait for the time that I have a house of my own and more significantly get to do up my kitchen with the swankiest of gadgets (Oh ya the list is ready ;))

This Diwali my dad gifted me a digital camera which in many ways becomes the 1st gadget I own … and am I super thrilled ?? :) I am still figuring it out with its various modes and features which I am sure would do wonders if used effectively. And yes, I am not too good with reading manuals so I either learn by trial and error or when my friends AB or KD sweetly offer to help me unravel the features. All that I know, is that I am super thrilled to now be able to capture things especially for my blog – when perhaps pictures speak better than words :)

So here’s to give you a snapshot of the potential photographer in me ;) as I thoroughly enjoy ...aimlessly clicking away :)

In conclusion - does this mark the beginning of my transition from 'TechNO' to 'TechKnow' .... hahaha honestly the answer would still be ...... "HELL NO" :)
